Autumn Garden Checklist: What to Do Now for a Thriving Winter Garden
Updated for Autumn 2026
As the days cool and leaves begin to fall, autumn is one of the most important seasons in the garden.
It’s not just about winding things down, it’s about setting your garden up for success in the months ahead. A little work now means healthier soil, stronger plants, and less effort come spring.
Here’s how to make the most of this season.
1. Embrace the Leaves (They’re Gold!)
Fallen leaves aren’t waste, they’re one of the best natural resources your garden has.
- Add them to your compost
- Use them as a natural mulch
- Or let them break down to improve soil structure

2. Feed Your Soil, Not Just Your Plants
After a productive summer, your soil is likely depleted of nutrients. Mix in organic compost, worm castings or aged manure to improve soil structure and replenish nutrients. Autumn is the perfect time to rebuild soil health.
Add:
- Compost
- Aged manure
- Organic soil conditioners
Over winter, these nutrients will break down and integrate into your soil, creating a rich, living foundation ready for spring growth.

3. Mulch for Protection & Moisture
A good layer of mulch acts like a blanket for your garden.
It helps:
- Regulate soil temperature
- Retain moisture
- Suppress weeds
This is especially important as conditions become cooler and drier.

4. Get Your Cool-Season Crops Started
Autumn is prime time to plant crops that love cooler weather.
Great options include:
- Leafy greens (spinach, kale, lettuce etc.)
- Broccoli & cauliflower
- Herbs like parsley & coriander
Starting now means you’ll have a productive garden right through winter.

5. Tidy Up: But Don’t Overdo It
Focus on:
- Removing dead or diseased plant material
- Clearing out spent crops
- Light pruning where needed
Leave heavy pruning for later (we’ll cover that in another post 😉).
6. Don’t Forget Your Garden Visitors 🐝
Even as temperatures drop, pollinators like bees still need access to fresh water.
Providing a safe, shallow water source can make a huge difference, especially when natural sources are limited.
A simple Bee Bath can help support your local ecosystem while keeping your garden buzzing with life.

Autumn is all about setting your garden up for success. By feeding your soil, protecting your garden with mulch, and planting for the cooler months ahead, you’re laying the groundwork for a healthier, more resilient garden year-round.
And the best part? Everything you do now makes spring feel effortless.
